DETROIT – The Coalition for Police Transparency and Accountability will hold a press conference calling for renewed federal oversight of the Detroit Police Department (DPD) based on a 25 percent rise in incidents of excessive police force and racist incidents in the last two years. The data, including a backlog of more than 780 cases of resident complaints of excessive police force, was compiled from news reports and public records into a 15-page letter to U.S. Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke with a request to mount an investigation into the DPD. The event will take place outside the Cass Corridor Commons on Thursday, May 19, the 97th birthday of Malcolm X.
Ironically, the rise in police use of excessive force began in 2020 with the daily marches against police violence in the wake of the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and many others.
